#5 Older. Younger. Which pace?

#5 Older. Younger. Which pace?

12 March 2024

"The only reason for time is so that everything doesn't happen at once." - Albert Einstein

Spotting someone older than you at the station or airport, think: "they have already been my age".

All sorts of people travel on a flight, even babies - who are known to cry. Why should we calmly put up with these younger, noisier neighbours? First, because every adult here was once a baby - without them human society would not exist. Second, because only with everyone here, collectively, is this flight affordable. If we don’t want to be bothered by anyone else on our flight, we can charter a private plane. They start at about £13,000 a go.

Is the quickest route always the best? When I moved to another country in my 20s, I could have flown, but I would have arrived a short 1.5 hours later. Instead I chose a different pace: a 14 hour train journey, giving me time to comprehend my new start.

Question

Imagine you are travelling internationally in 40 years time, alone. The world has changed from the one you know now. How would you like to be treated on your journey?
